What's a Covenant?

A covenant is an agreement between two or more parties. In other words, it’s a contract of any sort like a marriage, lease, vow or deed. A covenant can be between mankind and mankind or between mankind and spirit. Rather it’s the spirit of God or Satan. A covenant is made up of five parts that I have noticed.

First is the introduction of the parties involved in the covenant. An example would be God and Abram entering covenant and God naming the seed of Abram. In the introductory stage we will also see a reminder of past relationships and promises. An example of this would be a couple reaching out to a contractor that they used before. They are looking to have other services like an in-law suite added on. We then have the stipulations or expectations for the involved parties. An example of this would be a couple getting married for better or worse, until death do us part you know the rest. It’s an expectation between the two that they are going to be faithful, honest and together till somebody dies.

Next, we have the rewards or consequences if in the spirit they would be blessings and curses. The rewards are not always what is expected. It can be a bonus. Say a married couple has the expectations of being honest and faithful well the rewards of being honest and faithful could be each party is disease free, no miscommunication of who the children's parents is, companionship and all the other bells and whistles of marriage that are good. The consequences could be that someone cheated and now here comes confusion over who’s the parent or where a disease came from possibly even divorce.

No contract is complete without witnesses right. Even when a couple goes before a magistrate, they must have a couple of witnesses. Why because the bible says that a thing is established at the mouth of two or three witnesses Due. 19:15. The witness testifies that yes this happened, I was there. Finally, the covenant’s last stage would be a record of the event rather it’s a reminder of some sort, revision or review. Most covenants are conditional and involve symbolic acts and customary ritual. This is best seen as sharing a meal (celebratory meal), sharing blood if blood covenant or sacrificing an animal like in the Old Testament times or perhaps intercourse between husband and wife.
